During a period of mob agitation in Nuneaton, on the night of June 2, 1913, as three Latter-day Saint elders were returning to their lodgings from a visit to a member's home, a bottle filled with tar and feathers was thrown at them. It struck a brick wall near them, and the contents were splashed onto President Warren S. Tew.

Fuller account of this event (as retold in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 75, No. 24 (June 12, 1913), p. 379):

On the night of June 2nd, while three of our elders were returning to their lodgings from a visit to the home of a saint, a bottle containing tar and feathers was thrown in such a way that it struck a brick wall near them and the contents were dashed upon one of them—President Warren S. Tew. The bottle was broken into many pieces, but, although the elders were standing within a few feet of the wall, not one of them was injured, nor did any of the tar or feathers touch them, except as stated, upon President Tew, and he was not hurt in the least. We feel that the hand of the Lord was over His servants, and that they were protected from the evil designs of those who sought to do them harm.

In Their Own Words
