President Charles W. Penrose was suffering from a severe cold and had to leave his bed to attend district meetings in Blackburn. During his evening sermon, his voice was initially troubled by the cold, but it became clearer and stronger as he spoke, enabling him to deliver a powerful hour-long discourse.
Fuller account of this event (as retold in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 70, No. 36 (September 3, 1908), p. 573):
District meetings were held in the Blackburn branch of the Liverpool conference on Sunday, August 23rd, 1908. There were present: President Charles W. Penrose, President of the European mission; Elder J. W. Saville, president of the Liverpool conference, and a number of traveling elders. The morning session commenced at 10:30. After the usual opening exercises, the time was occupied by the elders, who reported their labors and bore testimony to the truth of the Gospel. President Penrose gave some very timely instructions. In the afternoon, the sacrament was administered, and the general and local authorities were presented and sustained. President Penrose was the next speaker. He held the large congregation spell-bound for fully an hour. His severe cold troubled him for a few moments, but gradually his voice became clearer and clearer and he was at his best. The elders all declare it was the best sermon they had ever heard the president deliver. In the evening, the hall was crowded, many strangers being present. President Penrose occupied the time, and delivered a powerful discourse on the principles of the Gospel. All present were well pleased with the meetings.
In Their Own Words
“President Penrose was the next speaker. He held the large congregation spell-bound for fully an hour. His severe cold troubled him for a few moments, but gradually his voice became clearer and clearer and he was at his best. The elders all declare it was the best sermon they had ever heard the president deliver. — Millennial Star 70:11”
