During a visit to Holland in June 1908, President Charles W. Penrose held a series of meetings. At a meeting in Alkmaar, where only two families of Saints lived, the hall was packed to capacity with 500 people inside and 250 outside. The account notes the power of the Holy Ghost in his preaching and the subsequent interest from strangers.

Fuller account of this event (as retold in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 70, No. 27, July 2, 1908, p. 427):

President Charles W. Penrose, of the European mission, accompanied by Elder De Bry, president of the Netherlands mission, arrived in Rotterdam on the 11th of June, 1908. They were met by President Sylvester Q. Cannon, of the Netherlands mission, and Elder Dalabout. During their stay in the Netherlands, President Penrose visited Amsterdam, Utrecht, Haarlem, Alkmaar, Rotterdam, and Dordrecht. At each of these places large crowds of people assembled to hear him. His discourses on the principles of life and salvation were delivered with remarkable freedom and in the spirit and power of the Holy Ghost. At Alkmaar, where there are only two families of saints, the hall was filled to its utmost capacity, five hundred people being inside and half that number outside. The greatest interest was manifested by both saints and strangers. The visit of President Penrose has given a great impetus to the work in the Netherlands, and the elders and saints feel much encouraged.

In Their Own Words

“At each of these places large crowds of people assembled to hear him. — Millennial Star 70:27”
