In June 1868, President Brigham Young provided comfort and final ministrations to Heber C. Kimball during his passing in Salt Lake City. Reflecting on the event during Kimball's funeral on June 24, 1868, President Young described his personal actions at the bedside, noting, 'I held my watch with one hand and fanned him with the other while he breathed his last.' Eyewitness George Q. Cannon, who was also present, reported that Kimball’s transition was marked by profound peace, noting that there was no gloom, struggle, or contortion of countenance. Cannon observed that Kimball 'passed away as quietly and as gently as an infant falling asleep on its mother's lap,' describing the atmosphere as filled with heavenly influences. President Young expressed great solace in the fact that Kimball was able to die peacefully in his own home surrounded by his family, rather than suffering violence or persecution.
