While serving as a young missionary in Pennsylvania, Orson F. Whitney experienced a dream of being in the Garden of Gethsemane. He witnessed the Savior's agony and prayer, and watched Him check on the sleeping Apostles three times. The scene later shifted to after the crucifixion, where the Savior and the three Apostles stood together, and Whitney ran to them, pleading to go with them. The Savior embraced him, saying he must stay and finish his work, and gave him a promise to join Him later that was dependent on his own actions.

In his account, Whitney notes that the sleeping Apostles he observed in the vision served as a reflection of his own spiritual state; he later interpreted his dream to mean that he was 'asleep at my post' by focusing on his own journalistic interests instead of his assigned missionary duties. He explicitly mentions that he wept out of 'pure sympathy' during the vision and felt a deep, personal longing to be with the Savior.

In Their Own Words

“One night I dreamed … that I was in the Garden of Gethsemane, a witness of the Savior’s agony. … I stood behind a tree in the foreground. … Jesus, with Peter, James, and John, came through a little wicket gate at my right. Leaving the three Apostles there, after telling them to kneel and pray, He passed over to the other side, where He also knelt and prayed. . . . I was so moved at the sight that I wept also, out of pure sympathy with His great sorrow. — Orson F. Whitney, Improvement Era, January 1926”
