While working in Nevada in the mid-1850s, Oliver Huntington, son of Dimick Huntington, was approached by an elderly, gray-haired Indian who appeared to have a peculiar light in his eyes. The Indian immediately recognized Oliver as a relative of Dimick Huntington, whom the Indians called 'Ne-oam-bahds' (meaning 'true talk'), and stated that he had known his father twenty to thirty years prior when Oliver was not yet born.

In Their Own Words

“In the year 1854, I was in the territory of Nevada, and while there I met with an incident that I have often thought of since. I was one day walking along the road, when I saw an old Indian coming towards me. He was very old, his hair was white as snow, and his eyes had a peculiar, bright, and intelligent look. As he came near me, he stopped, and looked at me very intently. I stopped also, and we looked at each other for a moment. He then stepped up to me, and laid his hand on my shoulder, and looked into my eyes, and asked in broken English, 'You name Huntington?' I replied, 'Yes, my name is Huntington.' He then said, 'You Ne-oam-bahds boy?' I knew that was the name the Indians had given my father, Dimick Huntington, and it meant 'true talk' or 'good talk,' because they said he never lied. I replied, 'No, I am not Ne-oam-bahds.' He then asked, 'You Allen boy?' I said, 'No.' He then asked, 'You Oliver boy?' I said, 'Yes, I am Oliver Huntington's boy.' The old man then took me by both shoulders and shook me, and his eyes filled with tears. He then said, 'Me know your father.' He told me that he had known my father twenty or thirty years before, when I was not yet born. He seemed to be very glad to see me, and he talked to me for some time about my father, and he seemed to have a great deal of love and respect for him.”
