Mr. Winthrop's prayers answered in Paris

While traveling in Paris with his family, Mr. Winthrop continued his daily practice of family prayer in their shared sitting room. Unbeknownst to the family, a woman staying in the adjoining room was in a state of great distress and temptation. She heard Mr. Winthrop praying for strangers and those who were tempted or lonely, and these prayers provided the strength she needed to resist ruin. Years later, she encountered Mr. Winthrop's daughter in New York and revealed how these prayers had saved her life.

A gentleman named Winthrop, while staying at a hotel in Paris, was in the habit of having family prayer in his sitting-room. A lady in the adjoining room, who was in great distress and temptation, heard him praying for those who were tempted and lonely, and the sound of his voice and the words of his prayer were the means of saving her from ruin. Years afterwards she met Mr. Winthrop's daughter in New York, and told her the story.
