Elder J. Lloyd Woodruff and Elder W. F. Kotter were traveling as missionaries without purse or scrip in Germany. After walking through rain all day and night, Elder Kotter contracted a severe cold that reduced his voice to a whisper. They spent the night sleeping on wet pine boughs in a grove without covering. The next morning, despite the cold and the frost on the ground, Elder Kotter awoke completely healed and feeling better than he ever had in his life.
In Their Own Words
“We had been traveling for some time without purse or scrip, and had been walking through the rain all day and night. My companion, Elder W. F. Kotter, had contracted a severe cold, which had reduced his voice to a whisper. We were in a small grove near Stettin, and as we had no place to go, we laid down on some wet pine boughs, with no covering but the canopy of heaven. It was a cold, frosty night, and we were thinly clad. I felt that the Lord would protect us, and I prayed that we might be preserved from the effects of the exposure. It may seem scarcely credible, but I testify that when we awoke we were not particularly cold, and were neither weary in wind or body, nor hungry, and more remarkable still Brother Kotter rose from the ground a well man, his cold having entirely left him. He said he never felt better in his life, and his words will answer for my own condition. We bowed our knees in praise and thanksgiving, and went on our way rejoicing, our testimonies much stronger and our hearts much happier than if we had slept in a good, warm bed, for had that been the case it might have been attributed to the goodness of the people, but as it was, nothing short of the hand of God could have protected us from cold and sickness.”
