During the devastating hurricane and flood in Galveston, Texas, four Latter-day Saint missionaries (Peter A. Norton, Horace L. Johnson, Samuel Shaw, and Heber N. Folkman) were staying in a house belonging to a family named Daniels. As the floodwaters rose, the Daniels family fled, but the Elders remained upstairs and prayed. Despite the extreme destruction surrounding them, the house where the Elders were sheltered was the only one in the entire neighborhood that escaped damage. The Elders were largely unaware of the extent of the disaster during the night, as they were able to sleep despite the storm, and were only confronted with the full scale of the destruction—including many deaths—the next morning.

Fuller account of this event (the complete account as preserved in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 62, No. 42, 18 October 1900, page 667):

Elders Peter A. Norton, Horace L. Johnson, Samuel Shaw, and Heber N. Folkman, who are laboring in Galveston, Texas, were in the city during the recent terrible hurricane and flood. They were staying at the home of a family named Daniels. When the storm began to rage, the family fled from the house, but the Elders remained upstairs and engaged in prayer. The house in which they were sheltered was the only one in the neighborhood that escaped damage, and the Elders were not aware of the extent of the disaster until the next morning, when they were confronted with the terrible scene of destruction and death.

In Their Own Words

“On the fatal night they were stopping with a family named Daniels. As the the water rose and reached the house, these good people fled panic-stricken to higher ground, leaving the Elders alone in the house. These went upstairs and commended themselves to the care of divine Providence. When morning broke and the desolation wrought stood forth in all its awe-inspiring details, it was found that the house in which the Elders were was the only one in that entire neighborhood that had escaped damage. It seems these missionaries were, during the entire night of horror, unconscious of the extent of the visitation. Elder Norton, in bis letter to the “News” says, part of the night they slept, though the water was surging and the wind raging all around them. — Millennial Star 62:42”
