Martha Ann Prior Jarvis's daughter fell dangerously ill with a fever that local remedies could not break. The child's condition worsened until she appeared to be at the point of death. Martha, a woman of profound faith, refused to give up and called for the elders of the Church to administer to the child. Following the administration and Martha's own fervent prayers and dedicated nursing, the child experienced a sudden and complete recovery. This event was viewed by the family as a direct manifestation of the power of healing and was recorded by Iva Balmforth Price as a testament to her ancestor's faith.

Fuller account of this event (the complete account as preserved in Autobiography of Ann Prior Jarvis, pioneer of 1861):

My eldest daughter had a very severe fever. We had her administered to by the Elders. She was getting worse, & Brother Jarvis would think she was gone when he came home from his work. I would pour it away three times a day, according to his orders, but not down her throat. Still she did not get better, so I prayed to the Lord to let me know what I was to do. I told him I kept the word of wisdom and I had her blest by the Elders and I wanted to know in a dream what to do. I had a dream that night that I must fast, so I fasted and then called a poor brother in to administer to her and then I frightened the doctor so he never came again. He came in the parlour as usual and he spoke very low and said: "She is gone?" Then I said, "Yes, sir, she is gone into the kitchen." He went with me into the kitchen. I know the change was so great he was frightened. It was a miracle, certainly.
