The narrator reports that he had been shown the Latter-day Saint work in a vision when he was very young, long before he had met any members or knew how to find a man authorized by God to administer gospel ordinances.

Fuller account of this event (the complete account as preserved in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 29, No. 42, 19 October 1867):

I had been shown the Latter-day Saint work in a vision when I was very young, long before I had met any members or knew how to find a man authorized by God to administer gospel ordinances.

In Their Own Words

“I was not a pressed soldier, neither overcome by argument; I had been looking for such a work for years, and had been shown it in a vision when very young. I had been told by people that I ought to be a “Mormon,” as I believed as they did, but I knew nothing about them. My feelings were before I knew any of them, O that I knew where to find a man authorized of God as anciently, to administer unto me the ordinances of the Gospel. — Millennial Star 29:42”
