During a two-day Pastoral Council held on July 1, 1856, in Newcastle-on-Tyne, involving local Priesthood leaders, the attendees experienced spiritual manifestations including the gift of tongues and interpretation of tongues.

Fuller account of this event (in the witness’s own words):

On the morning, July 1, the Presidents of Travelling Elders, and several Presidents of Branches assembled in the capacity of a Pastoral Council, which lasted two days, for the purpose of expressing our feelings one to another, and becoming more united together in spirit, and to take into consideration our future operations. During the sitting of the council, we had several manifestations of the Spirit, in tongues and in interpretations. On the second day, the Spirit of the Lord was poured out upon us in a remarkable manner. Brother Henry Louthe spoke in tongues, and President Croston gave the interpretation, which was to the effect, that if we would be faithful, and keep the commandments of God, and be united, the Lord would bless our labours, and add to our numbers, and that the work would roll forth in this region, and that the Saints should be blessed in their basket and in their store, and that the power of the Priesthood should be made manifest among us.
