On Sunday, March 9, 1879, during a meeting in the Manchester Branch, there was a remarkable outpouring of the Holy Spirit, including the manifestation of the gift of tongues.

Fuller account of this event (the complete account as preserved in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 41, No. 11, 17 March 1879, p. 171):

MANCHESTER CONFERENCE.—Elder John Schofield writes from Manchester, March 10th, 1879:—'We are having a good time in this branch. On Sunday, March 9th, we had a very refreshing time; the Spirit of the Lord was poured out upon us in a remarkable manner, and the gifts of the Gospel, such as tongues and the interpretation of tongues, were manifested in our midst, which caused us to rejoice greatly.'
