At the first patriarchal blessing meeting presided over by Joseph Smith, Sr. (father of the Prophet), Lydia Bailey (later Lydia Knight) received the gift of singing inspirationally.
She recorded:
"The first patriarchal blessing meeting over which Joseph Smith, Sen., presided was one of the most striking features of that particular period of time. In this meeting I received the gift of singing inspirationally, and the first song of Zion ever given in the pure language was sung by me then, and interpreted by Parley P. Pratt. It describes the manner in which the ancient patriarchs blessed their families, and gives some account of Adam-ondi-Ahman. The Prophet Joseph promised me that I should never lose this gift if I would be wise in using it; and his words have been verified."
This event is notable for several reasons: (1) it was the first recorded patriarchal blessing meeting in the Restoration, presided over by Joseph Smith Sr.; (2) the song was sung in what Lydia called "the pure language" — understood to be the Adamic or Edenic tongue referenced in Latter-day Saint theology; (3) it was interpreted by Apostle Parley P. Pratt; and (4) its content touched on Adam-ondi-Ahman, a sacred place in LDS theology. Joseph Smith promised Lydia she would retain the gift if she used it wisely, a promise she said was fulfilled throughout her life.
In Their Own Words
“The first patriarchal blessing meeting over which Joseph Smith, Sen., presided was one of the most striking features of that particular period of time. The Prophet Joseph promised me that I should never lose this gift if I would be wise in using it; and his words have been verified. I have sung in the pure language many times since then, and have always felt the Spirit of the Lord resting upon me in great power while doing so.”
