While visiting his brothers in western Iowa, Lorenzo D. Rupp encountered a dominant 'lying apostate spirit' among former Latter-day Saints. He faced intense spiritual opposition and hostility from these individuals, which he described as fighting 'fallen spirits night and day.' He felt it was a hellish environment and sought refuge by moving away to the Missouri river bottoms to perform manual labor.

In Their Own Words

“I was obliged to fight those fallen spirits night and day, as long as I was there, which was not very long. I was really glad to get out of-that hell, and go te the Missouri river bottoms, away from that influence, to cut cordwood, which I found I had to do to get money to go on to St. Louis. — Millennial Star 29:12”
