Lily Thurston had suffered for 15 years with tubercular trouble, including a diseased hip and spine that required 11 or 12 operations and 8 years in hospitals. She had been bedridden for 18 months, was confined to a spinal chair, and lost the power of speech. After attending a meeting of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and receiving the administration of elders, she began to regain her speech. Following a second administration at a conference in Norwich on November 2, 1913, she felt able to walk, removed her splints, and was walking the next morning. She remains healed and free from lameness.
In Their Own Words
“I had been afflicted for fifteen years with tubercular trouble, and had eleven or twelve operations on account of a diseased hip, which caused me to be lame. I was at different periods in hospital for eight years. I grew worse as time went on, and my spine became also affected. I then had to lie on my back for eighteen months, and was wheeled about in a spinal chair. I had also lost practically all power of speech. The doctors did not give any hope of my recovery. A friend came to visit me one day, as she was always very kind to wheel me out in my chair. While conversing with her about the Latter-day Saints, I said I should like to meet them out of curiosity. I was then very much prejudiced against them. She consented to take me on a Sunday to one of their meetings, which I attended, that being the first time I had ever met any "Mormon" missionaries. I became interested in the principles they taught, and asked her to take me again, which she kindly did. It was there I heard them speak of the power of healing through faith and prayer in accordance with what we read in the epistle of James: "Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: and the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him" (James 5: 14, 15). I then asked to be administered to. After this, I began to regain my power of speech, while many prayed in my behalf. I gradually improved in health, and was strong enough to travel to Norwich in my spinal chair to attend conference on November 2nd, 1913. I there asked to be administered to again by the elders. This was done, and I felt that I could walk immediately. Afterwards, when I got to my room, I took the splints off my leg, and the next morning when my sister came to attend to me, to her great surprise I was dressed and walking, and I have been improving since. My hip is quite healed up, and I can walk now without any discomfort or lameness. — Millennial Star 76:38”
