A shepherd dog belonging to Joseph Lownde of Douglas, Wyoming, was left at his mother’s home in Sutton, Nebraska, after being transported there in a baggage car. The dog traveled 760 miles back to its owner in Wyoming, arriving footsore and weary.

Fuller account of this event (the complete account as preserved in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, 1 January 1903 (Vol. 65, No. 1), p. 16):

A shepherd dog belonging to Joseph Lownde of Douglas, Wyoming, was left at his mother’s home in Sutton, Nebraska, after being transported there in a baggage car. The dog traveled 760 miles back to its owner in Wyoming, arriving footsore and weary.

In Their Own Words

“A REMARKABLE illustration of instinct and fidelity was recently given when a shepherd dog owned by Joseph Lownde of Douglas, Wyoming, returned footsore and weary to its owner after having been left at his mother’s home in Sutton, Nebraska. The distance was 760 miles. The dog had been carried eastward in a baggage car. — Millennial Star 65:1”
