During a severe flood of the Chattahoochee River, Abner Lee Squiggins and his wife Harpy were stranded on 'Hog Back' ridge. To save their lives, Abner tied a desperate plea for help around the neck of Yaller, a dog he had rescued from a ditch, and forced the dog to swim away. The dog traveled to Jeb Mark's house, and the message around its neck led to the successful rescue of the couple by skiff.

In Their Own Words

“It wan’t no trick. I never learned him to do nothin’. Morn likely it’s a question of tit for tat. You see, one day not long ago, I sort of done him a good turn. An’ now it looks mighty like he’s come along an’ done me one. — The Young Woman's Journal 39:2”
