In 1859, before departing for a hunt, John Moemberg (then known as Ech-up-wy) experienced a visionary dream in which an 'Indian man' appeared to him. The visitor provided specific spiritual instructions, counseling him to abstain from eating the blood of the animals he hunted and teaching him how to pray.
