John Brown was crushed by a coal harly and suffered severe cuts and bodily bruising, leaving him unable to move. Elders Waugh and Gibson anointed him and laid hands on him; he rose immediately, sat down to tea, and visited the Saints the next day.

Fuller account of this event (as retold in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 11, No. 13, p. 203):

I have just received a letter from Elder William Gibson, dated Loanhead, June 18th, 1849, from which I extract the following:—'I have a case of healing to relate, which I think will be interesting to you. On the 14th of June, a brother by the name of John Brown, who works in the coal-pit, was crushed by a coal harly, and was so severely injured that he was carried home in a state of insensibility. When he was brought to his house, he was found to be covered with severe cuts and bodily bruising, and was unable to move his body in the least without the most severe pain. Brother Waugh and I went out and found him suffering greatly; indeed he could not move his body in the least without severe pain; brother Waugh anointed him, and then we laid our hands on him in the name of the Lord, when he rose immediately, put on his clothes, and sat down and took tea with us as heartily as ever he did in his life. He went to his work on the 16th, and his cuts and bruises are all completely healed.'

In Their Own Words

“Brother Waugh and I went out and found him suffering greatly; indeed he could not move his body in the least without severe pain; brother Waugh anointed him, and then we laid our hands on him in the name of the Lord, when he rose immediately, put on his clothes, and sat down and took tea with us as heartily as ever he did in his life... His cuts and bruises are all completely healed. — Millennial Star 11:13”
