Almera Woodward Johnson's mother, Julia Hills Johnson, suffered from a 'crooked arm' that she had been unable to use for a long period. She persuaded her husband, Ezekiel Johnson, to take her to Kirtland, Ohio, to seek a healing from Joseph Smith. Upon arriving, Joseph Smith took her by the hand and commanded her to be healed, resulting in the immediate restoration of the use of her arm. A doctor who witnessed the event later attempted to explain it away through naturalistic philosophy, but the healing was widely regarded by the family as a miracle.
In Their Own Words
“The doctor who witnessed this miracle came to my house the next morning and related the circumstance to me. He attempted to account for it by his false philosophy, saying that Joseph took her by the hand, and by the power of his influence, or some mesmeric power, he had straightened her arm. — Benjamin F. Johnson, Early Scenes in Church History”
