While visiting his hometown of Carlisle, Elder John Barnes preached to attentive congregations for four successive Sundays. As a result of his efforts and ministry in the area, he baptized six persons into the Church.
Fuller account of this event (the complete account as preserved in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 28, No. 1, 6 January 1866, p. 14):
Elder John Barnes writes from Carlisle, under date of Dec. 20th, that he has been preaching in that city for four successive Sundays to attentive congregations, and has baptized six persons.
In Their Own Words
“The Carlisle Branch has not been visited by any of the traveling Elders during the last three years ; but Elder Baty, the President, and Elder Gibson do the best they can to instruct the Saints and teach them principles of virtue and trnth. I rejoice in the Gospel, and desire nothing so much as to be able to do the will of God, keep his commandments, roll forth his purposes, honor his servants, and work out my salvation, so that I may be saved and exalted in his celestial kingdom. With prayers for your well-being and prosperity, I am, your brother in the Gospel, JOHN BARNES. — Millennial Star 28:1”
