While serving as a missionary in Scotland in 1884, J. L. McMurrin felt an inexplicable, sudden impression to return to Edinburgh. Upon his arrival, he found a letter on his mantelpiece—which he clairvoyantly sensed before reading—that formally released him from his Scottish mission and reassigned him to labor in Ireland. This reassignment proved crucial, as it later enabled him to discover, through a series of serendipitous encounters, the whereabouts of his relative Hugh McMurrin and secure necessary genealogical records for his family.

In Their Own Words

“On Sunday, Nov. 24th, after meeting in the hall in High-street, Edinburgh, my companion and I started to spend the week in the country, traveling from place to place, holding out-door meetings. According to appointment we arrived at Conrigg, in which we concluded to hold forth. We reached this place in good time, and held our meeting, after which I was suddenly impressed to return to Edinburgh. It seemed a strange order to my companion in view of the plan we had laid out, and I felt peculiar about it myself; still we at once retraced our steps to that city, and on our arrival at the house in which we lodged I saw a letter on the mantel-piece addressed to me, and without knowing who it was written by, I said to my companion, “This is a letter calling me to Ireland.” He merely laughed at my statement; so I read to him the following: “Elder J. L. McMurrin,—Dear Brother,—You are hereby released from laboring in Scotland, and appointed to labor in Ireland. You proceed thither as soon as you can conveniently do so; and may God bless you in your new field.” I felt that the Lord had directed me, and that it was necessary for me to be in Edinburgh to receive that letter, and to be prepared for the change. I went to Ireland, and while there I was enabled to find the genealogy of my family, which I had been unable to do while in Scotland, although I had made every effort to do so.”
