Annette, having lost her sense of peace and religious conviction due to her association with Preston Barclay and his friends, struggles with her faith and ability to pray after her mother's death. She attends a street meeting to play her violin. During the singing of the hymn "O, My Father," she experiences a sudden internal release and a powerful renewal of her faith, receiving a "blessed, comforting calm" and the sense that her parents are near. This manifestation restores her courage and identity, leading her to publicly identify as a Mormon and play her violin with renewed devotion.

In Their Own Words

“And then the elders began to sing again. Something tightened within Annette’s throat at the first strain. The hymn was "O, My Father." As the words and the beautiful melody floated out over the street, even Tess and Hal grew silent. . . Annette closed her eyes tightly. It seemed that she was suffocating. She could not endure the strain. And then, as the song went on, it suddenly seemed that something gave way within her, and she was praying within her soul as she had never prayed before. And finally, with that power to pray, there came flooding over her a blessed, comforting calm; an exquisite joy she had not known for months; and her old courage and assurance. Her father and mother were near her once more pouring out the old love with which they had always enveloped her. She knew there was a God, and that He had not forgotten her. — The Young Woman's Journal 37:9”
