Inez Knight, upon arriving in Liverpool, England, felt initially that her mission was a matter of chance. However, during a meeting where the missionaries were assembled and addressed, she experienced a profound spiritual realization that her call was divinely orchestrated by the Father.
Inez Knight and her companion, Jennie Brimhall, arrived at the port of Liverpool on April 22, 1898, where they were met by her older brother, William. They subsequently proceeded to the mission headquarters, a four-story building that had been utilized by the Church since the 1850s, to meet with President Joseph W. McMurrin. According to Inez's diary records cited in Church histories, it was during this meeting with President McMurrin that she was explicitly told she had been called there by the Lord, prompting her realization of the weight of her missionary responsibility.
In Their Own Words
“I want each of you to understand that you have been called here by the Lord... As he spoke, I felt for the first time the great responsibility resting on my shoulders. Previously I had thought that it was a kind of 'happen' in my case, but now I know positively that the Father had made it 'happen' so. It was a testimony to me, and I felt that I could go forth and do the work required of me, for I knew that the Lord was with me, and that He would sustain me in my labors. — Inez Knight, as quoted in Saints: The Story of the Church of Jesus Christ in the Latter Days, Vol. 3, Ch. 1”
