Heber J. Grant initially failed to get Captain William H. Hooper to sign his insurance bonds. Shortly after, a messenger returned for him because the Captain had recognized him as the son of Jedediah M. Grant, leading the Captain to gladly sign the bonds and express his high regard for the father.
In Their Own Words
“I solicited the Captain's signature, but he promptly declined. I walked direct to my office and had been there but one or two minutes when a messenger from the Deseret National Bank, where I had just left the Captain, called and said that Mr. Hooper desired to see me. I thought to myself, 'He has changed his mind and is going to sign those bonds.' I went back to the bank, and as I entered the door, the Captain said: 'Young man, give me those bonds.' He signed them, and then said: 'When you were here a few moments ago, I did not know you. I was busy and did not pay any attention to you. After you went out, I asked who you were, and learning that you were a son of Jedediah M. Grant, I at once sent for you. I want to tell you that your father was one of the finest men I ever knew. I have never known a man who was more honest, more upright, or more faithful to his convictions than was Jedediah M. Grant. I am glad to sign your bonds, and I would sign them for any amount for a son of his.'”
