In a state of extreme poverty and hunger, a widowed woman named Mrs. Brighten and her daughter Effie are visited by two Relief Society sisters, Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Little, who provide food and shelter. The account documents that the child Effie prayed for food and for angels to be sent, and following her prayer, she had a vision of angels coming to her and singing, which the mother later recognizes as being fulfilled by the arrival of the Relief Society sisters, whom she calls 'ministering angels.'

Fuller account of this event (as retold in The Young Woman's Journal, vol. 10 no. 6 (June 1899), p. 286):

In a certain ward in Salt Lake City, there lived a widow and her little daughter, Effie. They were in very destitute circumstances, and one evening, having no food in the house, the mother felt very sad. Little Effie, seeing her mother's distress, said, 'Mamma, don't cry; I will pray to Heavenly Father to send us something to eat.' She knelt down and prayed very earnestly, asking the Lord to send them food, and also to send some angels to comfort them. After she had finished her prayer, she lay down and soon fell asleep. In a short time she awoke, and with a bright, happy face, said: 'O, mamma, I have had such a beautiful dream. I thought two angels came and stood by the bed and sang sweet songs. I wish it would come true.' The mother kissed her and told her to go to sleep again. A few minutes later there was a knock at the door, and two of the Relief Society sisters, Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Little, entered, bringing with them a basket of food. The mother, with tears in her eyes, told them of the child's prayer and dream, and said: 'Effie, your dream has come true. The Heavenly Father has sent two good, kind ladies, who must have been in reality ministering angels.'

In Their Own Words

“O, mamma, I have had such a beautiful dream. I thought two angels came and stood by the bed and sang sweet songs. I wish it would come true... Effie, your dream has come true. The Heavenly Father has sent two good, kind ladies, who must have been in reality ministering angels. — The Young Woman's Journal 10:6”
