Sister Esther Thorpe, a member, was seized by a violent fit requiring three men to restrain her. Elder Geo. H. Budd and other Elders administered to her by anointing with oil and laying on of hands, following which she was immediately relieved of the fit. The event was witnessed by three non-members.
Fuller account of this event (the complete account as preserved in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 60, No. 34 (25 August 1898), p. 541):
Sister Esther Thorpe, a member, was seized by a violent fit, which required three men to hold her. Elder Geo. H. Budd and other Elders administered to her by anointing with oil and laying on of hands, and she was immediately relieved of the fit. The event was witnessed by three non-members.
In Their Own Words
“By letter from Elder Geo. H. Budd, who is laboring in Rugby, we are informed that the power of the Lord was made manifest to a marked degree in favor of Sister Esther Thorpe, who had taken so violent a fit that it required three men to hold her. After the Elders had performed the ordinance of anointing with oil and laying on of hands and praying for her, she was immediately relieved from the fit, which had lasted about three hours. This was witnessed by three who were not Church members. — Millennial Star 60:34”
