Sister Cook, a member of the Church for nearly thirty years, suffered from asthma for many years. In July 1905, she was struck with a severe throat pain that became life-threatening. Elders Noble and Holbrook, while serving in the Birmingham conference, felt a specific, sudden prompting from the Spirit to take a tram to Saltley, despite not having a set destination. Upon arrival, they met Sister Cook's daughter, who was searching for them to ask for their help. They administered to Sister Cook, and as they began to pray, the pain eased, she coughed up two lumps of matter, and recovered immediately.
In Their Own Words
“I have been a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for almost thirty years, and have received many blessings since I yielded obedience to the Gospel. I know that the Gospel preached by the Latter-day Saints is true; I know that it is, as it were, a good tree, and that the fruit thereof is delicious to the taste. I know that the gifts and blessings of the Gospel are in the Church to-day, as they were formerly; I know that the Lord gives dreams and interpretations to His children, and that the sick are healed through the power of God made manifest through His servants. I am going to tell you, in my feeble way, of a great blessing which I received from the Lord, and for which I am very grateful. I have been a sufferer from asthma for many years. One Friday, in the month of July, last year, I was attacked with a terrible pain in my throat. My throat had never troubled me before. As night came on the pain became more severe, and I was very ill. Brother and Sister Ford, who live next door, offered up prayers to the Lord in my behalf, as did also good, old Sister Savage; but with all, it was feared that I would not live till the morning, My husband sent for the Elders to come and administer to me. About that time two Elders might have been seen coming down Dudley Road. They were Elders Noble and Holbrook of the Birmingham conference. They were going to see a man who had promised to shew them how we make bread in England. But on calling at the man's place they were told that he was not at home. They walked on till about half-way of the tram terminus, when President Noble, turning to Elder Holbrook, said, 'We will take this car.' 'But,' said Brother Holbrook, 'we have walked half-way.' 'No matter,' replied President Noble, 'We will take this car.' When they had reached the terminus Brother Holbrook said to his companion, 'Where are you going?' 'I am going to Saltley,' answered President Noble; 'I do not know for what purpose, but I feel impressed to go there.' When the two Elders were nearing the next tram, to go to Saltley, they saw my daughter coming from that direction. They went up to her and asked her where she was going. 'Oh, I am so glad that I have met you,' she replied, 'for I was on my way to get you to come and administer to my mother; she is very ill.' Well, they came and administered to me, and as soon as their hands were placed on my head, and they began to pray for me, the pain in my throat became easy, and before they had reached the foot of the stairs I coughed up two lumps of matter, and I immediately felt better. On the following Sunday I attended a district meeting. My heart is full of gratitude to the Lord for His blessings to me; and I pray that He may continue to bless His Saints and His holy Priesthood wherever they may be. — Millennial Star 68:40”
