After a grueling journey south from Salt Lake City to explore and settle, Daniel Jones and his party were trapped in severe, deep snow in the mountains. They ran out of food, with Jones sharing his last biscuit with his failing horse. Upon reaching the vicinity of the Utah settlement, Jones and others were suffering from snow blindness, frostbitten feet, and hands. Parley P. Pratt and others laid their hands on Jones, and he miraculously regained his sight. Shortly after, they received food from the Utah settlement and were saved from perishing.
In Their Own Words
“Finally we arrived within 50 minutes of the Utah settlement, and that night will be long remembered, for we ate the last of our scanty provisions; and also P. P. Pratt and others laid their hands on me, and I saw the first light of day which I had seen for days! Such joy and gratitude that caused! — Udgorn Seion (Zion's Trumpet), No. 16 (August 9, 1851) (English translation by Ronald D. Dennis)”
