During the height of the federal 'Crusade' against polygamy in the late 1880s, Hannah Louisa Terry Sharp was forced to flee her home to avoid U.S. Marshals. While living in hiding (the 'Underground') in a tent in the rugged mountains near the Terry Ranch in Southern Utah, she went into labor. Despite the extreme hardship, lack of proper shelter, and the danger of discovery, she was divinely preserved through the birth. She successfully delivered a daughter on October 23, 1888. To commemorate their survival and the circumstances of her birth during their flight, the child was named Hannah Louisa 'Exile' Terry, serving as a living testimony of the family's protection and endurance during their trials.
