As an infant, Esther contracted a severe case of 'black canker,' a mouth and throat infection that was frequently fatal among pioneer children. Her parents, Benjamin F. Johnson and Sarah Melissa Holman, were told the child could not survive. However, through the administration of the Priesthood and the exercise of faith and prayer by her parents, the disease was rebuked. Esther recovered completely, which her family recorded as a remarkable providence that preserved her life for her future mission as a pioneer mother.
