On the night of December 23, 1889, Ella Campbell experienced a disturbing dream involving a dark, repulsive tormentor she could not exclude from her home. Upon waking, she felt the same oppressive presence and power. She woke her husband to join her in prayer. When he took her hand to pray, he felt the power working on her like an electric shock. After they prayed, the terrible power released its hold, and the room was filled with peace, allowing her to sleep.

In Their Own Words

“On the night of December 23, 1889, I had a dream, or rather a vision, in which I saw a dark, repulsive looking creature, which seemed to be trying to force its way into my house. I felt that I could not keep it out, and the struggle to do so was so intense that I awoke in a state of great agitation. Upon waking, I felt the same oppressive power that I had felt in my dream, and it seemed to be right there in the room with me. I was so overcome with fear and the weight of this influence that I could scarcely breathe. I woke my husband and told him that there was some evil power in the room. He took hold of my hand; when he did so he felt the power that was working upon me so plainly that it thrilled him like an electric shock. I then endeavored to pray again, but my utterance was so checked that I could scarcely speak a word. After uttering a short prayer, my husband prayed, I following him. The trembling, all this time, had been increasing, if possible. Almost immediately after we had ceased praying that terrible power loosed its hold, and it was so susceptible to me when it left, that I felt it as plainly as I ever felt any one let go my hand, after they had been holding it in a strong, firm clasp. A feeling of peace and quietude immediately took possession of the room, and I was soon able to fall into a quiet, refreshing sleep.”
