Elizabeth Brotherton Healed of Ague and Chills Instantly When Parley P. Pratt Administered to Her (Sugar Creek Camp, February 1846)
Published September 28, 2026 at 4:32 AM
When the Saints left Nauvoo in February 1846 and crossed the Mississippi to camp on Sugar Creek, the first night brought a snow storm. Elizabeth Brotherton, sealed to Apostle Parley P. Pratt in 1843, came down with ague and chills so violent that she "thought I shook the ground." Parley P. Pratt administered to her, and she testifies simply: "I had them no more."
Fuller account of this event (the complete account as preserved in Autobiography of Elizabeth Brotherton (1816-1897), The Woman's Exponent 19, no. 12 (December 1, 1890): 94-95):
I took down with the ague and chills till I thought I shook the ground. Mr Pratt administered to me and I had them no more.
In Their Own Words
“The first night we camped here we had a snow storm. I took down with the ague and chills till I thought I shook the ground. Mr Pratt administered to me and I had them no more.”
