An unnamed LDS Elder in Ireland reports that while preaching, he was confronted by a mob of nearly one hundred people led by a man named Robert McClung. Despite the heckling, interruption, and accusations, the Elder stood in their midst and was inspired to speak with such power that the opposition ceased, and he was able to present the plan of salvation. He notes that the people became quiet, attentive, and shook his hands after he finished, with one Presbyterian gentleman even offering him dinner and a bed.
In Their Own Words
“I have been laboring in this town for some time, and have met with considerable opposition. On the 13th of July, I went out to preach, and the people here came out of their houses and hemmed me round in every direction. They kept increasing till there were nearly a hundred present. I stood alone in their midst, but yet I raised my voice and spoke to the people as follows: 'My Christian friends, I am well acquainted with every religious sect in your town and in your country. I have been a member of some, and I know these Latter-day Saints, and I tell you that I know these people are infinitely your superiors in fidelity to God, and in all that is holy. You do not know them. You have heard them spoken against by those who are ignorant of their principles, and who are afraid of the truth. I have left my home and friends, and all that is dear to me in my native country that the people of my country might have the knowledge of the everlasting Gospel, which has been restored to the earth in these last days through the Prophet Joseph Smith.' I then spoke to them of the principles of the Gospel, and the necessity of obedience to the requirements of heaven. When I had done, there was not a voice lifted in opposition. The man who had been the most bitter against me, a Mr. Robert McClung, stood by and listened with the rest. When bidding all good night, and thanking them for the attention they had given, the Presbyterian gentleman asked me when I would be back. I told them that I would be there on the following Sunday. He asked me if I would take dinner in my house with his wife and me, and I had to stand out with them, explaining the way of salvation, and the people began to clamor for it. This was just what I wanted, and I asked them to be still and I would explain it to them. They did so. They were then very kind and amiable, and shook hands, bidding me good night.”
