Two missionaries sent to Dundalk, Ireland, were threatened by local residents and the Hibernian Society. A crowd and hostile men intimidated them, but the local police chief provided protection, assigning eight officers to guard them at a time, and ordered his force to read the missionaries' literature. Subsequently, the Hibernian Society took over the guarding duties, swearing an oath that the missionaries would not be molested, while they were followed by hundreds of people during their activities.

Fuller account of this event (the complete account as preserved in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 70, No. 52 (December 24, 1908), p. 827):

In Dundalk, Ireland, Elders T. J. Bennett and J. H. B. have been having a very lively time. They were threatened by the Hibernian Society and a mob of people, but the chief of police came to their rescue and gave them protection. He assigned eight policemen to guard them at a time, and ordered his force to read the literature of the Elders. The Hibernian Society then took the matter in hand and swore that the Elders should not be molested, and they have been followed by hundreds of people wherever they have gone.

In Their Own Words

“The chief of police came down and had a talk with the brethren and advised them to leave the town as soon as possible. They showed him their passports and claimed protection from him. They told him they had broken no law and were going to stay there until they were ordered to leave by their president. He left eight policemen to guard them, and went to the barracks and ordered every officer on the force to read the books we were selling, that he might know what we are teaching. — Millennial Star 70:52”
