On the evening of February 28, 1844, Joseph Smith sent Brother Coolidge to request that Brother Phelps gather the brethren to pray for Brother Coolidge's sick child, as the father feared the boy could not survive until morning. In his own journal, Joseph Smith records that after this request, Elder John Taylor and other brethren joined in prayer for the child’s recovery.
Fuller account of this event (the complete account as preserved in The Joseph Smith Papers, Journal, December 1842–June 1844; Book 3, 15 July 1843–29 February 1844, p. 227):
Brother Coolidge came in and said his child was dying and requested me to send for Brother Phelps and others to pray for it. I sent for Brother Phelps and others and they prayed for the child.
