Elder Jabez Woodard served in Switzerland, where he encountered a clergyman who, unlike others, prayed for the success of the Latter-day Saints. Despite local efforts to have Woodard imprisoned, this clergyman's influence prevented it. Woodard notes that if this man had lifted a finger against him, he would have been imprisoned, noting the divine protection provided by the man's favor.

In Their Own Words

“I am very happy to say that in Switzerland also we have one good clergyman. He is not a bishop, but his influence is as great in his sphere as that of the bishops in England, and even greater. He prays that the “Mormons” may be successful. He is the first man that I have ever found in any part of the earth who prayed that the “Mormons” might be successful. If it had not been for the influence of that man, blood would have flowed in Switzerland ere now. Persons went to him to imprison me; and, as the old poetry when running away from the Valley—* If Brigham had only lifted his finger, it would have been all over with him,”—so, if this man had only lifted his finger, I had been in prison. Whenever this man met any of our Elders, he would advise them to be faithful to the covenants they had made. I like to mention such an honourable exception as that, brethren, because it is an honourable exception.—Millennial Star 21:5”
