Elder Hugh Ireland was converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints after hearing a street meeting conducted by Elder C. W. Penrose and others. Although the meeting was disturbed and might have been perceived as a failure, Elder Ireland heard enough to be convinced of the truth. He later filled a successful mission and was instrumental in converting others.
Fuller account of this event (in the witness’s own words):
With reference to street meetings, he wished to say that it was through one of these he first heard the gospel. The meeting was disturbed, and might have been thought a failure; but he had heard enough from the lips of Elders C. W. Penrose and others to convince him that the message was true. He in turn had succeeded in convincing others of the truth, one of whom had filled a successful mission, and in his turn had succeeded in convincing many of the truth of the gospel.
