Elder Henry Stagg, serving on board Her M.S.S. Devastation in Besika Bay, reports a spiritual conversion experience with a fellow serviceman. Stagg notes that he feels the work of God is with him and has been able to bear his testimony to many shipmates. He has successfully taught a young man who has developed a deep faith in the Gospel through Stagg's influence, and Stagg expresses confidence that this new convert will be a useful member of the Church once he is able to be baptized.
In Their Own Words
“I am glad to tell you that I feel well towards the Work of God, and I know that my heavenly Father is working with me. In regard to the young man of whom I spoke in my last letter, I can now call him my brother, although I have not had the privilege of baptizing him yet, but that is neither his fault nor mine. As soon as the opportunity offers itself, he says he is willing to obey the mandates of heaven, and I am confident that he will, if faithful, be a useful member in the Church. He has received a good education, and has seen better days—his changed circumstances caused him to join the service, but he says now that it all happened for the best; now I can say the Lord has made me a blessing to my fellow man, even in this wretched line of life,—this is a beginning, I don’t know how it will end, but I have borne my humble testimony to many since I last wrote to you, and told them what they must do to enter the kingdom of God.”
