The construction of the Hurricane Canal required men to work on sheer cliffs, often suspended by ropes over the Virgin River. Despite the extreme hazards, the use of black powder for blasting, and the primitive equipment available between 1893 and 1904, James Jepson and other leaders noted that not a single life was lost during the decade-long project. Larson records this as a fulfillment of the faith of the 'Dixie' pioneers who were promised protection if they remained dedicated to their mission to bring water to the parched bench land.
