During an 11-day voyage from Liverpool to New York, many Latter-day Saint passengers suffered from sea-sickness and other illnesses. Through the laying on of hands and rebuking of diseases in the name of the Lord, every instance of sickness among those anointed was healed. Additionally, the passengers experienced a spirit of unity despite being of eight different nationalities.
In Their Own Words
“On board S. S. Wyoming, June 18, 1890. President George Teasdale. Dear Brother,—We are now nearing the end of our voyage, and expect to arrive in New York to-morrow. We have had a very pleasant trip, although we have had some rough weather. The company has been very healthy, with the exception of a few cases of sea-sickness, which, however, did not last long. A few cases of other kinds of sickness occurred, but the power of God was manifested in a remarkable degree, inasmuch as not one failure occurred whenever the sick were anointed and the diseases rebuked in the name of the Lord. It makes us all rejoice to think of this. There has also been felt a wonderful influence of the Spirit of God in all our meetings and associations with one another. We have had our morning meetings and services regularly, and each meeting was well attended and contributed toward the preservation of the happy feeling with which we started on our way to Zion. We have had representatives from eight different nationalities, and yet there has been no discord. There is only one spirit—one great aim. Verily, if this were not the work of God, it could be considered nothing short of a miracle. We have had the hearty co-operation of the officers of the ship, and the treatment we have received has been all that could be desired. We feel to thank the Lord for His protecting care over us, and we pray that He will continue to bless us until we reach our destination. Your brother in the Gospel, J. M. Sjodahl.”
