Laron Pratt, an assistant superintendent of the deaf mute Sunday School in Salt Lake City, experienced a profound medical condition starting in early childhood. Around the age of three, following a severe fever, he lost his hearing entirely. This illness resulted in him becoming a semi-mute, lacking the ability to speak normally. Over many years, Pratt dedicated himself to rigorous training, which eventually allowed him to develop skills in lip-reading and spoken English, despite the significant challenges posed by his profound hearing loss. These abilities later enabled him to become a pivotal leader and teacher within the deaf mute Sunday School community. Pratt attributed his progress in speaking to his faith in God and a life of constant prayer, viewing his ability to communicate as a testament to his spiritual perseverance.

In Their Own Words

“I am what may be called a semi-mute, and have been deaf and almost dumb since a little child, but by faith in God I have learned to talk some. — The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, 13 June 1892 (Vol. 54, No. 24)”
