President David O. McKay testified throughout his life of a sacred vision he received early in his ministry in which he beheld the Savior. This vision became the spiritual foundation of his entire presidency and was referenced repeatedly in his addresses. McKay taught that this manifestation confirmed to him the reality of the Savior's presence guiding the Church. His presidency was marked by unprecedented Church growth, temple expansion, and the global consolidation of missionary work — all flowing from the vision that sustained his faith.
Fuller account of this event (in the witness’s own words):
I then fell asleep, and beheld in vision something infinitely sublime. In the distance I beheld a beautiful white city. Though far away, yet I seemed to realize that it was the City of the Savior. And in the city I saw a great concourse of people. They were dressed in white, and were singing a song, the melody of which seemed to thrill my very being. The song was 'Hosanna, Hosanna, to God and the Lamb.' The air was filled with the melody, and the whole scene was one of such peace and happiness that I thought to myself, how impossible it would be for any human being to be unhappy who had a place in this city. While I was gazing upon the scene, I beheld a man coming toward me. He was dressed in white, and as he approached, I recognized him as the Savior. He looked at me with a look of such love and compassion that I felt that I could have fallen at his feet and worshipped him. He said nothing, but his look was enough to fill my soul with a joy that I had never before experienced. I felt that I was in the presence of the Savior, and that he was pleased with my efforts to serve him.
