A young girl, daughter of Charles Smith, was stricken with cholera near Edinburgh. Doctors noted that her pulse had ceased. Elders C. Mc. Pherson, R. Mc. Oven, John Brown, and others administered to her by prayer and anointing, and she awoke in health shortly after.

Fuller account of this event (in the witness’s own words):

On the 29th day of July, 1849, a young girl, daughter of Charles Smith, was taken very bad with the cholera, at a place about three miles from Edinburgh, called Gilemerton. The symptoms were very severe, and she was reduced to a very low state. The medical attendant said she could not live, and indeed her pulse had ceased to beat, and she was to all appearance dead. We, however, felt that the Lord could restore her, and we were determined to exercise faith in His name. We prayed, anointed with oil in the name of the Lord, and laid our hands on her, asking our heavenly Father to countenance the administration by restoring her to health, which was manifested unto us in a very short time after; for she slept soon after, and awoke in sound health and played with the rest of the children all day, and is enjoying good health at present. We feel to give God the glory for this manifestation of His power. C. Mc. Pherson, R. Mc. Oven, John Brown.
