In 1832, Brigham Young, his brother Joseph Young, and Heber C. Kimball traveled to Kirtland, Ohio. At a gathering of elders at Joseph Smith’s home, Joseph called upon Brigham to pray. Brigham spoke in an unknown tongue, which Joseph identified as the pure Adamic language and affirmed was of God. Heber C. Kimball recalled this as the first time Joseph had heard the gift among the brethren. Joseph Smith’s history records that John P. Greene and others also spoke in tongues, and that Joseph himself then received the gift and spoke in a tongue not understood by those present. Joseph also prophesied that Brigham Young would one day preside over the Church. Kimball’s autobiography clarifies that speaking in tongues among the Kirtland brethren was exercised by a group of elders, not Brigham alone.

In Their Own Words

“In the fall of 1832, Brigham Young, his brother Joseph Young, and Heber C. Kimball, came to Kirtland to see the Prophet. Here I will insert a short history of the first interview of Brigham Young with the Prophet Joseph. It was in the fall of 1832, that Brigham Young, Joseph Young, and Heber C. Kimball, came to Kirtland to see the Prophet. We stopped at brother Joseph's house. He had gone out to chop wood. When he came in, we were invited into the room where he was. We soon sat down, and he began to converse with us. He asked us to pray. It was my turn to pray. I prayed, and in my prayer I spoke in tongues. As soon as we arose from our knees, the brethren flocked around him, and asked his opinion concerning the gift of tongues that was upon me. He told them it was the pure Adamic language. Some said to him they expected he would condemn the gift Brother Brigham had, but he said, 'No, it is of God, and the time will come when Brother Brigham Young will preside over this Church.'”
