During a Relief Society social in Blackburn, a blind girl and her mother arrived and were granted permission to sing. A collection was taken up by the attendees, raising fifteen shillings and fourpence, which was double the amount ever previously collected for her. The mother expressed deep gratitude, and the event was considered a significant success.

Fuller account of this event (in the witness’s own words):

During the concert a blind girl, accompanied by her mother, entered and asked permission to sing, which is her only means of support. Their request was gladly and most freely granted. While she was singing a collection was taken up, and the sum of fifteen shillings and fourpence was realized for their benefit. The caretaker of the building made the remark that it was double the amount ever collected before. The poor mother could not keep back the tears of joy that trickled down her cheeks, which showed full well her heart-felt appreciation of the most generous offering of those present.
