While living in the pioneer settlement of Paragonah, Utah, Betsy Lucinda Baker Topham suffered from a severe and debilitating case of 'milk leg' (phlegmasia alba dolens) following the birth of one of her children. The condition left her crippled, in extreme pain, and unable to perform her duties as a mother and pioneer wife. According to the manuscript history written by her granddaughter, Marie Topham Berrie, Betsy exercised great faith and requested that the elders of the Church be called to administer to her. Immediately following the laying on of hands and the prayer of faith, the swelling and pain left her limb. She was able to rise and resume her household work immediately, a recovery that the family and community regarded as a direct miraculous intervention through the power of the priesthood.
