Baptist priests in Alabama spent three days traveling the country trying to raise a mob to drive Mormon Elders out of the region. Approximately twenty men responded to the call. Upon the priests explaining their object, one man refused to participate in religious persecution, and another man called the ministers fools and expressed his intent to fight for the Mormons if fighting were to occur. Consequently, the attempt to drive out the Elders was abandoned.
Fuller account of this event (the complete account as preserved in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 41, No. 12, 24 March 1879):
Elder John Morgan writes from Alabama, under date of Feb. 24th, that the Baptist priests have been traveling through the country for three days, trying to raise a mob to drive the Elders out, but they could only get about twenty men to respond to their call. When they explained their object, one man said he would not engage in religious persecution, and another called the ministers fools, and said if there was any fighting to be done he would fight for the Mormons. So the attempt to drive the Elders out was abandoned.
In Their Own Words
“A few weeks ago, a number of Baptist priests tried to raise a mob te drive our Elders out of Alabama. To effect this, they rode through the country for three days, to invite the people together. About twenty of the roughest class responded to their call. The priests explained their object, and aaked for an expression of their feelings. One man said that if it was a religious persecution, he would not have anything to do with it. Anotber told the ministers that they were u set of fools, and had better go home and attend to their own business, and let the Mormons alone; that he had been to hear them preach, and they (the Mormons) could whip every last one of them, and not half try; and as for fighting, he said that if there was any to be done, he woald fight for the Mormons. Several spoke in the same strain; and the driving was abandoned, and the Elders are left in the peaceable discharge of their duties. — Millennial Star 41:12”
