Following the conference in Nauvoo, the family occupying the Old Mansion House—who had entertained the Elders for several months—requested baptism. The parents and eldest daughter were baptized in the Mississippi River before a crowd of over one hundred witnesses.

In Their Own Words

“Returning to Nauvoo to-day the writer was delighted to find, as a pleasing climax to the conference, that the baptism of the family occupying the Old Mansion House had been arranged. These people, who have lived in Nauvoo but one year, have entertained the Elders for several months, whenever any have been here, and their home was headquarters for President Ellsworth while here at conference. Monday morning the Elders were informed that they were ready for baptism, and when the time for the ceremony arrived there were over one hundred persons present at the river to witness the ceremony. The parents and eldest daughter were baptized. The assembly was very orderly and respectful, and for the most part followed to the home, a block away, filling the large parlor, where the new members were confirmed in solemn ceremony. — Millennial Star 67:45”
